Put a Photo Inside Your Text
Fill letters or shapes with a photo or texture, or cut the letters out of a plate with knockout.

Photo fill shows a picture inside your letters instead of a flat color. It's the look behind a lot of festival and event posters.
Fill text with a photo
Select the text element. Big, heavy fonts work best.
Open More β All options β Effects.
Choose Photo fill and pick a photo or texture from your uploads.
Adjust the fill so the part of the picture you like sits inside the letters.
The same option works on shapes, so you can fill a badge or a blob with a photo.
Knockout
With Knockout, the letters are cut out of a colored plate, so whatever is behind the design shows through them. It's a clean way to put a photo inside a title while the rest of the plate stays solid.
Text backgrounds that hug the words
If you want a highlight behind the words, choose Lines or Block as the text background. It now follows the words line by line, instead of covering the whole text box.
Or just ask
"Fill the word SUMMER with the beach photo."
"Put the sunset texture inside the headline and add a thin white outline."
"Knock the title out of a black plate so the photo shows through."
Good to know
Thin fonts leave too little room for the photo to show. Go heavy.
Add a stroke or shadow from Layer Styles and Title Styles if the letters get lost against the background.
