The background sets the mood for the whole design. Open the Background tab in the left side panel to change it. Everything below applies to image and carousel designs; the video editor has the same panel plus animation and multiple background segments over time.

The background panel

At the top you'll see a live preview card of the current background with any overlay or dual-tone effect applied. Below it, a segmented control lets you pick the type: Solid, Gradient, Mesh or Transparent.

Solid

One flat color. Click the color chip to open the picker (visual picker, hex code, or your brand colors), or pick from a row of curated solid presets. If you have a Brand Kit, a Brand row shows your own colors as ready-made tiles.

Gradient

Blend up to four colors. Add a color with the dashed plus chip, hover a chip to remove it, and click a chip to change it. Drag the angle dial to any exact angle from 0 to 359Β° (it snaps lightly near the 45Β° steps) or use the Up, Right, Down and Left quick chips. Sixteen preset gradients and, with a Brand Kit, high-contrast brand color pairs are one click away.

Mesh

An organic blend of three to five colors that looks modern and premium. Pick from real mesh preset tiles or brand-tinted mesh palettes, edit the color chips, and hit Shuffle on the preview to re-roll where the color spots sit until you like the composition. In the video editor, mesh backgrounds can also be animated with a speed slider.

Transparent

No background at all. The canvas shows a checkerboard, which won't appear in your export. Use it for logos, stickers, overlays and web graphics. When you export, choose PNG or WebP and turn on the transparent-background toggle in the export popover; JPG can't hold transparency.

Photo backgrounds

Any background can carry a full-bleed photo behind everything: it's cover-fitted and centered, with an optional blur so your text stays readable. This is the go-to look for product and ecommerce ads. Ask the AI ("use the product photo as a blurred background") or set it from the background settings.

Overlays and dual tone

Below the type controls are two thumbnail grids that preview each effect over your current background:

  • Overlay: None, Grain, Vignette, Halftone, Dots, Grid, Paper. Adjust the opacity for a subtle texture.

  • Dual tone: None, Spotlight, Aurora. Aurora animates in video designs.

Both are hidden for transparent backgrounds.

Keeping it on brand

  • Use your primary brand color as a solid for bold, unmistakable posts.

  • Build gradients from two brand colors, or grab one from the Brand row.

  • Brand Mind steers the AI's default background choices toward your palette on every plan.

Tips

  • Check contrast: light text on a light mesh is the most common readability problem.

  • Busy mesh or photo backgrounds work best with simple foreground layouts.

  • Type it instead: "make the background a dark navy to purple gradient at 135 degrees with a grain overlay."
